This table lists the system requirements required to upgrade to Windows 2000 Professional. The recommended minimum is listed in the middle column.A 133Mhz Pentium-compatible or higher, 64 MB min. recommended RAM; more memory generally improves responsiveness and there is a 4GB maximum. You will need a 2GB hard disk with a minimum of 650 MB of free space.Windows 2000 Professional supports single and dual CPU systems. Our demo computer is set-up with a 500Mhz Pentium III processor, 128 MB of RAM and a 12GB hard disk.We have this machine jam packed with applications, most of which you will see today. You situation may require the recommended minimum, a set-up like ours or something in between.
Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer
The Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer tool analyzes your system and reports potentially incompatible hardware devices and software applications. The tool compares the devices and applications on your system against a list of known issues. This tool is available to run during Windows 2000 Setup to help ensure your installation will succeed. Note: The list of potential issues reported by the Readiness Analyzer tool is based on Microsoft and third-party testing, but is not exhaustive (for example, Microsoft did not focus on testing games or entertainment software)
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Support
Windows 2000 supports thousands of devices.USB support lets you connect and disconnect a wide array of peripherals such as joy sticks, scanners, and camcorders without configuring or rebooting your desktop or laptop.
Driver Verification (Certification)
Microsoft uses its driver certification program to provide safeguards to assure you that device drivers have not been tampered with and reducing your risk of installing non-certified drivers.
With Windows 2000 Server, your business can take full advantage of the Internet economy. Based on the solid Windows NT foundation, it incorporates the Internet technologies you need to build Web sites and Web-enabled applications. Smart management features help you cut operating costs. Its reliable, so your business stays up and running. And you can take advantage in the latest hardwarefrom tiny smart cards to enormous servers.
Windows 2000 Server lets you:
Internet-enable your business with essential technologies woven throughout the operating system. Cut costs with improved management systems for networks, servers, and Windows desktops.
Sustain up-time with extensive reliability and availability improvements.
Take advantage of new hardware with broad support for existing and emerging hardware and communication products.
If you are buying a new PC or need a full-version (as opposed to an upgrade) license of any Microsoft desktop operating system, there are only two ways to acquire it.A new PC (desktop and laptop) should come preinstalled with the operating system and should have the Certificate of Authenticity label applied to the side of the desktop or bottom of the laptop. You may also purchase a full version license in a full packaged product from a retail store.
If you have an Open License, Select, or other type of Microsoft licensing agreement, you may purchase only upgrades to existing operating systems to current versions.
If your current PCs have an OEM version of a Microsoft operating system, and you are planning to retire those PCs by scrapping them or donating them, you may not transfer the existing OS license to a new PC.
The bottom line is, Im here today, talk to me, make me earn my money.I am a resource for you and you can ask me question. In fact, at the last show I got a ton of great questions on the break. And hey, if you choose to buy your software from someone other than SoftChoice, thats fine.Just know that I am here to address your questions throughout the day.Come and find me on any break, Ill be glad to help.
Before you go out and spend any money on hardware there are some steps to take. These will help assure that you end up with the hardware you really need.Saving you time and money.

First determine what software you will be running and what the hardware requirements are.Keep in mind that some software manufacturers will provide two different specs. One will be what is required the other will be what is recommended. Can you guess which specifications you should concern yourself with?If you are running some custom or vertical market applications you may also want to contact current users to determine what configuration is really required.

After you have determined what hw configuration is best, consider your future needs to expand or upgrade. Most growing businesses will want to have computers that are expandable and upgradeable.Databases will grow and software will be upgraded often requiring greater hw capacity.

If youre consider refreshing your companys hw, dont forget to see if any of your current equipment is still usable.Perhaps, some machines could be used elsewhere within the organization or the viability of taking advantage of MSs Terminal Services technology, which will allow you to run the latest software on legacy PCs.

Take the time to calculate the total cost of ownership or TCO.I always thought TCO was only for big businesses, but its not.A common mistake is to shop for the least expensive computer hardware without considering the other costs to actually owning the hardware over a period of time.

For example, what percentage of the total cost of ownership is the actually cost of the hardware itself?

In a typical five-year life cycle its only 20%!!

What actually contributes to the total cost of ownership?

Training
User productivity
Downtime
Upgrading
Maintenance and support
AdministrationCan I get some use out of legacy equipment I currently have?Youre going to learn about MS terminal services technology later in our seminar. If you have legacy hw youll find that it just might still be usable.
Do your best to determine whether or not youll be needing to expand or upgrade.
A common mistake, especially bySMB, is to look for simply the cheapest box available.Question, what percentage of the total cost of ownership is the hardware?
In a typical five year life cycle its only 20%!!
TCO includes:
Training
User productivity
Downtime
Upgrading
Maintenance and support
Administration
Growing businesses have different needs than enterprise companies do.

Enterprise companies typically have their own IT departments, SMBs dont. So, the trick is learning to leverage someone elses expertise.

Has anyone here ever built their own computer?I have, several, in fact.Ive also purchased a bunch of what we call white boxes.

My experience, learned the hard way, is while you may save on the purchase price, youll end up paying for things on the other end.

What happens if you have driver conflicts?

Did you know, for example, Compaq maintains a list of drivers for each model of computer.

Another problem is licensing.Ive been stuck both without the software I needed and without licenses for software I thought Id paid for.

What are some of the pit falls?

Some components arent on the HCL.
Driver conflicts.
Non-existing or non-responsive support.
Pirated software pre-loaded.

When you run into problems and your computers are down, whos paying your employees?

Purchasing name brand equipment, either from a reseller or directly from the manufacturer is a key way to leverage others expertise.

Id like to point out that Compaq has specifically researched what SMB need and has designed desktops and servers to meet the needs of SMBs.

And key to todays seminar is that nobody tests MS software more thoroughly than Compaq. When we say it will run MS software, it will.Did you know that there are more than 7000 MCSEs working for Compaq?Thats more than any other manufacturer and almost more the twice the next closest of our competitors. If fact, MS software is developed on Compaq equipment.
Youre main three financing options are:
Loan
Third party lease
Manufacturers lease

Typical advantages to leasing:
-More technology for your money
-Improve monthly cash flow (use capital for growth, not just infrastructure)
-Finance 100% of hardware and software solutions (one deal, instead of many, also able to add to the lease without whole new lease)
-Upgrade technology as business grows (refresh points during the lease)
-Plan and budget
-Manage disposal of old equipment (Compaq can help you dispose of your old equipment, so you dont have to worry about how and where to dispose of it)
-Gain potential tax advantages
-Spend less time on paperwork

So the take away here is, if youre going to finance your hw purchases, leasing should be considered and if you decide to lease you will get a better lease deal through the manufacturer, as opposed to third party funding.
So, how do I purchase from Compaq?Well, basically however you want to.

[Note:We will be changing the URL and phone number for the direct method]

You can hook up with reseller, like ____________ or ______________ at the back of the room. This is great way to leverage someone elses expertise.

If you prefer you can buy direct, online or by phone. We are offering BD specials on our site and over the phone. In order to take advantage or our BD specials you will need this pass code: _________________

Retail is also an option.
If you are not networked and need to get a network up and running real fast and real cheap, a peer to peer network is the way to go.You dont need any special software if you are using a MS OS.And its inexpensive, easy to set up and configure.

However, its only for a limited number of PCs, in a fulltime environment performance will become an issue andthere is minimal data security.

A better networking choice is the client/server model.A client/server network includes your desktop computers and peripherals as well as a specialized computer called a file server. The files server is the heart of the network.Your data will reside on the file server, even some of your programs can, as well.

With MS SBS 2000, which youre going to learn more about later, its easy to set up and administer. Also you can provide your users with shared internet access, remote access and terminal services.

SBS 2000 is designed for SMB allowing them to leverage others expertise and keep the TCO down.

A relatively new network consideration is wireless networking. Its an ideal solution if you arebuilding or leasing office space.Especially if your location is difficult to wire or subject to strict zoning or building or fire codes.

You eliminate the cost for cable and the cost of installing the cable. You also eliminate the cost of maintaining the cable.
It makes it easy to move your network to a new location or change workstation locations for your existing network. You dont need a permanent network access point.
You have the same capabilities as you do with a traditional cable network:
Shared Internet Access
Email
Mobility
File Sharing
Printer Sharing
File Backup via Server

Small Business customers are looking for a technology solution that will help their business be stronger, more efficient, and more competitive in todays business landscape. The want to understand how a client/server based network will help them be a better business. Many know that Windows 2000 Server is a solid, popular foundation for business based networking. In fact, 28% of small business LAN users plan to upgrade/install to a Windows 2000 Server-based network next year.Dont miss the opportunity to up-sell customers from Windows 2000 Server to Small Business Server 2000 this is good for your customers because the wealth of functionality delivered by Small Business Server 2000 and the exceptional value proposition behind the product makes it an economical, strategic business choice for themand its good for you because Small Business Server 2000 delivers a solid platform for further service opportunities with your small business customers.
#1 Internet Enable your Business. On the next slide, we break this topic out to help customers understand what the Internet can mean for them and their business. #2 Manage and Grow Customer Relationships. In some of our primary research with small businesses weve asked them to define what success means to them.We were expecting to hear about growth and profit objectives but overwhelmingly the number one definition of success was related to attracting and retaining satisfied customers.Well talk about how Small Business Server can help them do that 2 slides from now. #3Enhancing Employee Productivity. And finally, well look at just a few of the key ways Small Business Server enables small businesses to enhance employee productivity, another critical objective in small businesses. It turns out that attracting and retaining happy, productive employees ran a close second to having satisfied customers in our research.Providing employees with the tools to be successful will help small businesses to better attract and retain long-term employees. The loss of an employee in a large corporation often gets absorbed. But losing an employee in a small business can be a business closer.
So, now lets look in further detail at these 3 areas...
Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 is the 3rd generation release of the full-featured network solution designed to help businesses with up to 50 PCs take advantage of the Internet, strengthen customer relationships and improve employee productivity.
Small Business Server 2000 includes Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, plus Windows 2000 Server-based solutions for e-mail, fax, database, and secure, shared Internet access. All of this powerful technology is integrated to enable a single, unified setup and centralized management across all of the component applications, setting new standards for ease of installation, use, and administration.
Specifically, Small Business Server 2000 includes:
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.Network operating system providing file, print, Web, application and management services.
Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.Messaging and collaboration server delivers anytime, anywhere access to the people and information you want.
Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000.Extensible firewall with Web cache server and policy-based security, acceleration and management of shared Internet connections.
Microsoft SQL Server 2000.Fast, reliable, Web-enabled relational database management server and engine for running a multitude of business software solutions.
Microsoft Shared Fax Service.Sends and receives faxes and provides support for fax boards and ISDN cards, fax-over-IP and broadcast fax support.
Microsoft Shared Modem Service.Enables client machines to use modems shared on Small Business Server to connect to external information services.
Microsoft FrontPage 2000.The Microsoft Office Web site creation and management tool.
Microsoft Outlook 2000.The Microsoft Office e-mail and personal information manager.
Microsoft Health Monitor 2.1.Sends server status and advance warning of potential problems.
Plus, all of this powerful technology is integrated to enable a single, unified setup and centralize management.More on that in a bit
The wealth of functionality delivered in the Small Business Server 2000 box is priced to be less than the cost to individually purchase Windows 2000 Server plus just one of the other included component applications. So, even if a small business customer doesnt have an immediate need to use all of the applications and features in Small Business Server 2000 right away, its less expensive for them to invest in the full-featured Small Business Server solution than to purchase the Operating System and even one of the separate component applications individually. Thus, its the economical, long-term buy.
The reason we are able to sell this solution for such a great value is because we place parameters around usage of the product 1) A maximum of 50 PCs can be concurrently connected on a Small Business Server network; 2) Trusts are disabled in Small Business Server 2000, so it cannot be used as a corporate branch office solution; 3) Small Business Server 2000 must be the root server of the Active Directory forest, meaning it must be the Domain Controller and is designed to be a single site solution.Note, however, that other servers can be members servers on a Small Business Server 2000 network.
There is not an upgrade path from Small Business Server to Windows 2000 Server. There is an upgrade path from Small Business Server 2000 (or Small Business Server 4.5) to BackOffice Server 2000.It is a BackOffice Product Upgrade SKU. There is an upgrade path with a price break for customers moving from a competing product to Small Business Server. For a list of qualifying competitive products, refer to www.microsoft.com/smallbusinessserver. There is also an upgrade path and price break for customers moving from Windows NT or Windows 2000 Server to Small Business Server 2000.The upgrade from Windows 2000 Server is an in-place technical upgrade.
Server Requirement Notes:
Fax Service requires dedicated Class 1 Fax modem plus at least one additional modem to be shared for other services such as RAS, Proxy dial-up and Modem Sharing.See Windows 2000 Hardware Compatibility List for compatible Ethernet network interface card.Actual requirements may vary based on system configuration and usage.
Client Requirement Notes:
Server access using dial-up networking requires a modem.Ethernet network interface card must be compatible with desktop operating system.Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device also required.
Now that you know that SBS can increase productivity for your business, are you wondering What are your first steps to installation?First you need to gather the following information before you begin. User Name, Company Name, Computer Name, Microsoft Windows NT Server Domain Name, Time Zone, Small Business Server CD Key, Company Address, Administrator Password, Microsoft Office CD Key, Area Code, and Company Fax Number.
Ensure that your network does not have an existing Primary Domain Controller. Small Business Server will install as a Primary Domain Controller. This means you can integrate additional Windows NT Server computers into the network but you cannot integrate Small Business Server into a network with an existing Primary Domain Controller.
Check your hardware. Base requirements include Pentium II 200-megahertz (MHz) processor or higher, 4-gigabytes (GB) of available disk space, Super VGA monitor (800x600x16 colors minimum), CD-ROM drive, floppy disk drive, Ethernet network card, 128-megabytes (MB) of RAM, and modem.
Check your modems. Small Business Server requires at least one Windows NT Server 4.0-compatible modem. To use the Small Business Server fax service, you must have at least one additional Class 1 fax modem.
Gather Windows NT Server 4.0-compatible drivers. Make sure you have the latest Windows NT Server 4.0-compatible drivers for each of the devices on your server.
Turn on all external devices and ensure that your network card is connected to a hub. Some new network cards have an auto-detect or an auto-sensing feature. These features require the network card to be plugged into a hub. If a hub is not found, these features may prevent Small Business Server Setup from recognizing the network card.
Check for existing disk partitions prior to running Small Business Server Setup. Some servers are shipped with a system utility partition that will cause problems with Setup. If you have a system with an existing partition, refer to the third question in the Frequently Asked Questions section on this page for more information.

Microsoft: Now youve just seen me demonstrate some amazing functionality in Small Business Server 2000.This is what were talking about (hold up box); this is SBS 2000, and it comes with all that great info in one box.(SC rep says, Hey <MS presenter>, can I see that box?)          SoftChoice: Hey, can I see that box?So, what is in this box?(Opens box, takes out each item and throw over shoulder).Weve got some environmentally friendly packaging, a license, some documentation, a CD (place CD reverently on table), and a registration card. What is the most important thing in this box?(Interact w/audience, wait for someone to say license). That is it!The license is by far the most important thing in this box.And why is that? What does a license do for you?It gives you the right to install and use software.
SoftChoice:Now, there are a few different types of licenses. For instance, servers are licensed a little differently.(talk server license and CAL).
Microsoft interjects:Hey, hold on a minute.I think some of the people here might have a question about this.Is that CAL another piece of software I have to load?
SoftChoice:Noexplain. Then use gym membership analogy to talk CAL/server diagram
Microsoft: At end of gym analogy say, OK let me see if I have this right. If Im a business owner and I want my staff to have email and I want to get Exchange; I would purchase an Exchange license for my server. Then, for each of my employees who want to access their email from that server, their client machines need a CAL.Does that make sense to everyone?
SOFTCHOICE PRESENTER: The server software does not physically restrict the number of connected devices; rather, this number is established by the number of CALs acquired and can be
controlled by the system administrator.
CALs allow devices (computers, workstations, etc.) to access a server
CALs are NOT needed for server to server communications
Recent Survey completed:
Nearly 50% of customers under reported their Client Access Licenses. Why?
Misunderstanding of policy
Poor record keeping and Tracking
SoftChoice: OK, thats one example how to license a client and a server. But what if you have 10 PCs, or 50 or 200?Talk Open License, talk Upgrade Advantage, talk Licensing Guide and make sure they pick one up.
Suggested Upgrade Advantage verbiage for Microsoft to interject:The key difference is, on the one side youre buying an Office version upgrade, on the other side, with Office Advantage, youre investing in Microsoft Office technology over a two year period.

Microsoft:Now that weve seen the newest version of Office, I hope youll see how it can really make you work smarter. Now lets talk about how you can buy smarter. There are a lot of ways to purchase software, as weve discussed. One of the liabilities we want to protect you from is being victimized by software piracy.
SoftChoice: You wouldnt believe how many Big Day customers weve spoken to that have been victimized by piracy. And in the bigger picture, we have some data on how piracy is affecting all of us.
MS and SC talk data slide.Example:Look at that, $1.0 billion dollars in lost tax revenue across the US.Can you imagine how many schools could have been built with that money?
MS:By educating your employees and your customers about the dangers of piracy, youll protect your organization in the long term.
SC:Lets say theres a business owner who buys pirated software, maybe he got a great discounted price online, and he brings it back to his business. He might think hes the hero because he saved so much money. But guess what?He bought nothing. When he tries to get technical support, it will be as if his software does not exist. Also, a lot of pirated software is beta code, so he may get incomplete software. If he was going to throw away his money, why give it to a crook?Hes been taken advantage of, and has paid someone to do it.Do you know who would be legally liable if they get audited? Its not going to be the guy who loaded the software or who purchased it.Its the owner of that business who will get punished.
SC:Counterfeit softwareThis can be as simple as a college kid who is downloading beta software, making copies in his dorm room and selling them on an auction site. All the way up to professional counterfeit rings managed by organized crime.
End-user copying
Unlicensed copying
Under-reporting of usage
Hard-disk loading
Dishonest dealers sell PCs with illicit software pre-installed
Disks and documentation often are missing or incomplete
Counterfeiting
Unauthorized mass duplication and distribution
Mischanneling
Special discount licenses distributed to organizations that do not qualify
Centralize purchasing of software.
Delegate and document responsibility and accountability.
Acquire software only from reputable resellers.
Always keep original CD(s) and documentation, such as:
Invoices, End-User License Agreements (EULAs), Certificates of Authenticity (COAs)
If EULA is online, print it out and keep a copy.
Track software acquisitions and conduct periodic audits.
Annual audits, at a minimum
Spot-checks between audits
If in doubt, call the software manufacturer.
